The feeling
Cupramontana keeps its back to the Apennines and its vines to the sun. It is the capital of Verdicchio — a working wine town on a ridge, with four churches, a hermitage in the woods and the Adriatic half an hour east.
It is not a film set. Mornings are deliveries and shutters; afternoons are quiet enough to hear the valley. The town keeps a pharmacy, a post office and a handful of bars — and, improbably for somewhere this small, a fibre connection faster than most city flats.
7 of 9 axes measured (78% coverage). No data yet for cost, community — those axes are excluded from every score on this page, not counted as zero.

How it scores
Read low numbers as character, not failure — but read them.
Excellent
Daily needs in the village itself. Groceries, pharmacies, a post office and a clinic inside the town — you can live a week here without starting the car
Excellent
How reachable the outside world is. The station sits down the hill and the motorway junction is closer still
Fair
Is the population holding or draining away. The population is holding better than most hill towns its size, but it is not growing
Very good
Signs of life: bars, places to eat, places to stay. Enough bars and places to stay for an evening, not for a choice of them
Good
Sun, winter, summer. Hot, bright summers and a short frosty winter at this altitude
Excellent
Measured internet speed. Among the fastest connections we have measured in a village this small
Good
Air quality against WHO guidelines. Clean by Italian standards, though fine particulates still cross the WHO line

January averages 4.7°C and July 24.4°C.

The air
A bar past the line means the annual mean exceeds the WHO guideline for that pollutant.
PM2.5
9.4 µg/m³ · 1.88× guideline

PM10

A note on the data
54 days a year exceed the WHO daily PM2.5 guideline. That is normal for central Italy and worth knowing anyway.

A note on the data
Nearest facility tagged as a hospital is "Ambulatori" — that name suggests an outpatient clinic, not a hospital with an emergency room. Rather than trust it or zero it, we excluded hospital distance from this village's access score and reweighted the rest.
Who it fits
Each score weights the axes differently. Coverage says how much of that weighting we could actually fill — a score built on fewer axes is a weaker claim.

Chasing price per square metre. Tolerates isolation, but a village that is emptying fast is a house that will never resell.
